New Delhi: Myanmar leader who was overthrown Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in court on Friday wearing Top White and Longyi’s brown wrap which was a typical uniform for prisoners in Southeast Asian countries, a source with knowledge about the court process.
Nobel Lauriate Suu Kyi, 76, was sentenced to four years in prison for decision and violating the Coronavirus regulation by the court.
The sentence is then reduced to a two-year period of detention in its current location that is not disclosed.
This is the first time Suu Kyi, who is known for wearing elegant traditional clothes sometimes with flowers in her hair, has been seen in a prison uniform in court and it is not clear whether it signifies a broader change in how she and other senior officials at the trial treated.
Myanmar has been in chaos since the coup against the government of Suu Kyi who was democratically elected caused a widespread protest and raised international concerns about the end of the temporary political reform after decades of military government.
The verdict was the first of almost a dozen cases against Suu Kyi who brought a combination of maximum sentences more than 100 years in prison.
Suu Kyi denied all the charges.
The former capital mayor of the capital, Naypyitaw, Myo Aung, who was also tried, was also seen in court in a prison uniform on Friday, said the source asked not to be identified.
The cover, known as Longyi, is a traditional clothing worn by men and women in Myanmar.
In comments published on Tuesday, Min Aung Hlaing’s military ruler said in the government’s media that Suu Kyi and who was overthrown by the President won Myint would remain in the same location during their trial and would not be sent to prison.
Suu Kyi, Princess of Myanmar’s independence hero, spent years under house arrest because of his opposition to military government but was released in 2010 and led the National League for the Democratic Party for a landslide victory in February 2015 before being arrested after February 2015 1 military coup.
His trial in Naypyitaw has been closed for the media and lawyers Suu Kyi has been prohibited from communicating with the media and the public.
