Melbourne: Seventh-seeded ribs Swiatek strengthened from the one set to the edge of Romania Sorana Cirstea 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the Slugfest baseline on Monday to book a place in the Australian Open.
The 20-year-old Swigek, who won the French Open title in 2020, came to his first meeting against Cirstea ranked 38th in the dominant form because he did not lose a set at Melbourne Park Grand Slam in three matches last week.
But Cirstea, 31, placed a pole under pressure for the first time in the tournament with a few heavy blows from behind the court and Swiatek had to explore far to find the way back into the contest and reach the first Australian quarter-finals.
Swigek sealed the contest at the first match with the 29th winner and will meet Belarus Seed Seed Aryna Sabalenka or Kaia Kanepi from Estonia for a place in the last four.
“For me, a week without crying is not a week.
I cried when I lost; I cried when I won,” said an emotional swigek in court.
