Baghdad: armed people from the extremist group of Islamic countries attacked the army barracks in the North Mountains of Baghdad on Thursday, killing 11 soldiers when they slept, Iraqi security officials said.
Officials said the attack took place in the Al-Azim district, an open area north of Baqouba in Diyala Province.
The state of the attack was not immediately clear, but two officials who spoke with the Associated Press said the Islamic group’s guerrillas went into the barracks at 3 am local time and shot dead soldiers.
Officials spoke with anonymous requirements because they were not authorized to issue an official statement.
Brazen attacks more than 120 kilometers (75 miles) northern the capital of Baghdad is one of the most deadly targeting the Iraqi military in recent months.
