Syria hiked bread, diesel prices as crisis deeper

Damascus: The steep bread and a diesel price increase came into force in the parts of the Syrian government which was hit by war on Sunday, brought more pain for civilians in the economic crisis.
Damascus repeatedly raised fuel prices in recent years to overcome the financial crisis triggered by a long civil war over the decade and was exacerbated by a series of western sanctions.
The price of diesel fuel is almost threefold and the price of bread is double on Sunday, according to the official news agency there, just days after Damascus announced a 25% increase in gasoline prices.
“We are afraid of increasing food and medicine prices,” said Damascus Resident Wael Hammud, 41, said.
President Bashar al-Assad also issued a decree that increased the salary of the public sector by 50%.
