Taliban Ban Co-Education In Herat: Report

KABUL: The days after vowing to respect women’s rights in Afghanistan, Taliban officials in the turbulent Herat Province have prohibited joint education in government and private universities, describing them as ‘roots of all crimes in the community’.
The decision was taken after a meeting between the University of Professor, the owner of the private institution, and the Taliban authorities, the Khaama press news agency reported on Saturday.
This is the first ‘fatwa’ issued by the Taliban after the takeover of Swift in Afghanistan last week.
On Tuesday, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman in his first public appearance to overcome this concern at a press conference, promised the Taliban would respect women’s rights in Islamic law norms, in an effort to describe a more moderate attitude.
