Taliban Bans Co-Education in Afghanistan Herat Province: Report

Kabul: days after swearing to respect women’s rights in Afghanistan, Taliban officials in Herat Province who have prohibited joint education in government and private universities, describing them as’ roots of all crimes in society.
The decision was taken after a meeting between the University’s professor, the owner of a private institution, and the Taliban authorities, the Khaama press news agency reported on Saturday.
This is the first ‘fatwa’ issued by the Taliban after the takeover of Swift in Afghanistan last week.

On Tuesday, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman in his public appearance to overcome the concern at a press conference, promised the Taliban would respect women’s rights In Islamic law norms, in an effort to describe a more moderate attitude.

Farid named co-education ‘root of all crimes in society’, the report said.
In the past two decades, Afghanistan has implemented a mixed co-education and a gender-based separate class in all universities and institutions.
Education said the government universities would not be affected by these decisions but private institutions would struggle with low number of female students.
Herat, according to an official estimate, has 40,000 students and 2,000 lecturers at universities and private and government universities.
