HERAT: Taliban on Wednesday launched their first attack in the provincial capital in Afghanistan, because of a major attack on government forces, local officials said.
The fierce battle has erupted in the western city of Qala-i-Naw, the capital of Badghis after a guerrilla caught all the districts around it.
“The enemy has entered the city, all districts have fallen.
The battle has begun in the city,” said Governor Badghis Hessamuddin Shams told reporters in a text message.
The Head of the Badghis Provincial Board Abdul Aziz defender and board member Zia Gul Habibi confirmed that the battle between the Taliban and government forces had erupted in the city.
“The battle continues in various parts of the city today,” Defender told AFP, added that some security officials had given up to the Taliban at night.
Habibi Provincial Board Member said the Taliban was in the city police headquarters and the local offices of the state spy agency, the National Security Directorate.
“Provincial council officials have fled to the army camp in the city.
The battle continues in the city,” he said.
