KABUL: Taliban Highest Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada on Sunday said he “strongly supports” political settlement of conflict in Afghanistan even when the hard-line Islamist movement has launched a sweep attack throughout the country.
“Apart from the military’s profits and progress, the Islamic Emirates strongly sided with political settlements in the country,” said Akhundzada in a message released before the Muslim vacation next week Eid al-Adha.
“Every opportunity for the formation of Islamic systems, peace and security that presents itself will be used by the Islamic Emirates,” he added.
This announcement came as a representative from the Afghan government and Taliban militants sitting for the new round talks in Doha during the weekend, stirring hope that a long-stalted peace talk was underestimated.
For months, both parties have met and went in the capital of Qatar, but had reached a little if there was an important success with the discussion seemed to have lost momentum when militants made a large increase in the battlefield.
Talks are caused by resumes on Sundays.
Taliban leader said his group remained committed to forge a solution to end the war but slammed “opposition parties” to “waste time”.
“Our message remains that instead of relying on strangers, let’s finish our problems among our own and save our homeland from the applicable crisis,” he added.
Since the beginning of May, the Taliban has launched a surprising attack in the Afghan countryside who had seen the group captured the district scores, border crossings and even attacked the provincial capital.
Guerrillas launched their latest offensive after US-led foreign troops began their final withdrawal which will be completed at the end of August after almost 20 years of military involvement.
