WASHINGTON: The Taliban must decide whether it wants to be recognized by the international community, US President Joe Biden said in an ABC interview aired on Thursday, adding that he did not think the group had changed his fundamental beliefs.
Asked whether he thought the Taliban had changed, Biden told ABC News, “No.” “I think they will go through a kind of existential crisis about: Do they want to be recognized by the international community as a legitimate government? I am not sure they did it,” he said, adding that the group appeared more committed.
for his belief.
But, he said, the Taliban must also be wrestling whether it can provide Afghanistan.
“They also care whether they have food to eat, whether they have income that …
can run the economy, they care whether they can defend the community or not the community that they actually say they are very caring,” Biden said in an interview, recorded on the day Wednesday.
“I didn’t rely on all that.” He added that it would take economic and diplomatic pressure – not military power – to ensure women’s rights.
