Chennai: Tamil Nadu will add 11 government medical colleges and 1,450 mbbs for acceptance in the current year because the center has provided a nod to 150 undergraduate seats in Ariyalur, Dindigul, Nagapattinam and Krishnagiri Medical Colleges after virtual inspection.
With this, the total number of government medical colleges in the state will rise to 37 (including Esic Medical College in KK Nagar) and the total seat of UG to 5,120.
The agreement emerged a day after the Minister of Health MA Subramanian met the Mansukh Mandaviya Health Minister in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Last month, the center had given permission to Tamil Nadu to recognize 850 students for undergraduate medical programs in seven new government medical colleges respectively in Virudhunagar, Kalakurichi and Ooty, and 100 seats each in Namakkal, Tiruvalur, Tiruppur and Ramanathapuram Medical Colleges.
“This center also promises the country that it will consider the request to add a seat of 100 seats in the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital government.
We hope to get a nod this year,” Subramanian said.
Even though the country has submitted 200 seats in Namakkal, Tiruvallur, Tiruppur and Ramanathapuram, the state may not get it this year, he added.
In August 2019, as part of a national mission to increase the number of medical colleges in this country, the center had given permission to Tamil Nadu to establish 11 medical colleges.
After the construction of hospitals and medical colleges, members of the Body Regulatory Apex, NMC, check the campuses in physical and virtual mode.
In addition to 36 government medical colleges, the state has 16 self-financing universities affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Medical University Dr.
Mgr which offers 2,350 mbbs seats.
At least three more colleges have submitted 150 seats each for this academic year.
In addition, at least three universities are considered to have submitted an increase in seats.
The state has 10 universities which are considered to offer 2,000 MBBS chairs.
Teachers at private training institutions say even if competition is difficult with more students better, this additional seats will fulfill the aspirations of more students.
In 2020, NEET decided for the open category was 598, followed by 554 for BC, 527 for BCM, 521 MBC, 443 for SC, 375 for SCA and 346 for ST in government universities.
Counseling for medical and dental acceptance will be detained immediately after NTA releases the results of the NEET.
In addition to offering medical education, these colleges will help the country expand tertiary care to the district.
The hospital attached to each new college will offer free tertiary care for people.
“The state has registered for medical colleges in six districts and other funds from RS 50 Crore for secondary care hospitals in 19 districts,” added the minister.
