Coimbatore: Head of Nadu Minister Tamil M St Stalin on Tuesday wrote to Chief Minister Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan asked him to increase the water supply from the Siruvani Dam to add drinking water to the city.
Stalin stated that Kerala’s irrigation department has provided less water in recent years than the specified quantity, producing water shortages in the city of Coimbatore.
He stated that the water quantity had dropped because he lowered the level of water storage in the Siruvani Dam.
He stated that the department maintained a storage level at 877.0 meters instead of the full reservoir (FRL) level of 878.50 meters.
Because of the reduction of 1.5 meters level, only 528 MCFT can be stored on a capacity of 650 MCFT, resulting in the loss of storage of 122 MCFT (19% of total storage).
As many as 101.4 mld water must be released for coimbatore, not exceeding 1.30 TMC every year, according to the agreement with the Tamil Nadu government on August 19, 1973.
But over the past six years, water only ranges from 0.484 TMC and 1,128 TMC has been received, he said .
“It was taken to my notification that for the past three years apart from adequate rainfall in Siruvani’s catch, Kerala’s irrigation department maintains a storage rate in the Siruvani Dam only at 877.0 meters, not a full reservoir level (FRL) of 878.50 meters.
As a result, Only about 85 months of water can be supplied from the scheme against 101.40 MLD, “he said.
“I ask for your personal attention and intervention in this issue and urge you to direct the authorities concerned to maintain the storage of Siruvani Dams to the FRL; that is, 878.50m in the future, thus giving water supply without interruption to Coimbatore Corporation and beneficiaries Others from the project.
I also asked you to direct the officials concerned to increase the water supply of the Siruvani Dam to allow the supply of 101.40 MLD, “Stalin said.
