Before the death of five birds, the zoo had a very good ostrich population.
The poultry unit and bird preparation from the livestock department in Katupakkam held the first ostrich pair in 2009.
Two years later, the birds put around a dozen eggs in the zoo.
Eggs were incubated for about 45 days after six chicks were born.
This is the first Indian zoo where ostrich eggs managed to hatch.
A former zoo official said that the natural conditions close in their cages helped breed and put eggs.
Since then, the zoo always has ostrich children every year.
Only a few days ago, the zoo also recorded the death of a 19-year-old Kavitha Singaah who died of old age and senility.
