Udhagamandalam: A month-old elephant calves are trapped in a hole in the range of pandalur forests in nilgiris saved and reunited with their herds on Tuesday.
Pandarur residents, who were warned by a hard trumpet from the elephant herd on Tuesday morning, had told the officials of the forest department.
Forest personnel do a search and find female elephant calves in the mining hole in the Goldmine RL area.
“Usually, a herd of nursing, only consisting of female elephants, will accompany Betis.
Maybe after feeling the arrival of the forest team, the herd has left the place,” the officers range the Prasad Forest Ganesan to the Toi.
It took almost two hours for the forest team to save the calf from the hole.
“The calf might fall into the hole the night before.
The trumpet herd to help save the calf,” the official said.
Because the calves looked weak, it was fed lactogen and glucose with the help of Mahouts at Gene Pool Eco Park.
The team waited more than two hours for a breastfeeding herd to return to that place, but it was in vain.
Betis is left in the nearest little hole and monitored.
A team was formed to look for elephant mothers and herds.
At 5 pm, a herd was found one kilometer.
“We don’t bring a calf to the herd because the elephants are very sensitive to the smell.
If the human aroma is found, the herd can leave the calf,” said Ganesan.
“We make a calf running one kilometer to reach a herd.” But when the team left the calf close to the herd and left the place, Betis followed the team.
“Two elephants from the flock forward, threatening to collect the team.
Because it is a difficult field, we have to take care of themselves.
Therefore, we tie a calf foot with a whistle strap and leave the place around 8pm,” said Ganesan.
On Wednesday, the team found a whistle cable and footprint trail left by a herd.
“We ensure that the herd takes Betis.
Elephants take care of children and their family members as we do,” the official added.
