Tamil Nadu Govt Wants to Have Metro in Madurai and Coimbatore

The DMK government follows its efforts to develop a metro train network in Madurai and Coimbatore in the budget.
Metro Rail is a DMK Pet Project, with the MK Stalin, as the local administration minister, launched its construction in the first Chennai in 2009.
Minister of Finance Palanivel Thiaga Rajan in his budget speech said the detailed eligibility report (DPR) for Metro Report (DPR) for Metro in Madurai will be prepared and the formation of Metro Rail in Coimbatore will be taken earlier in consultation with the trade union government.
The AIDMK government has an interim budget in February which was allocated 6,683 crore for Metro Rail in Coimbatore.
The DPR is ready for a 44-km line proposed in the city, where Metro Rail is proposed three years ago.
There are demands for the Metro train by the trading agency in Madurai because the city with a population of 25 lakh is considered the second most affected by traffic congestion in the state.
The official Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said, “CMRL will conduct a study and will prepare the DPR for Madurai as well as for coimbatore.” The DMK government is also regulated to provide a boost for Metro rails in Chennai.
With construction for the lines between codambakkam and shiples, said Rajan in the Assembly, “This government will urge the trade union government to approve early formal approval for equity participation in Phase II Project Rail Metro Chennai as committed to budget speech of the FINANCIAL FINANCE, and Counter Funds What is needed is the earliest release.
“The government has also set June 2025 as the deadline for starting services in the first line of phase 2 – Kodambakkam to Poonamallee bypass.
The entire phase 2 network is scheduled to be completed in December 2026, he added.
The government plans to accelerate the counseling path from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus through Tambaram.
