Chennai: After a two-day decline in the number of new infections, Tamil Nadu reported an increase to 23,888 new cases on Tuesday when 21 districts across the state reported an increase in their 24-hour tally.
Death also increased to 29 taking cumulative death to 37,038.
Of the 23,989 new cases on January 15, everyday cases were dipped to 23,443 on Monday.
“Many people have traveled to districts for Pongal celebrations.
Many urban residents, especially those who have mild or no symptoms at all, may have taken infection into rural areas as well.
With such a reunion and family celebration, we expect an increase in new cases during A few more days, “said Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
Chennai, who continued to report the highest number of cases in the country reported a marginal decline of up to 8,305 new cases compared to 8591 on Monday.
At least 11% of the bed isolation in TN occupied and the centers such as Vellore and Chennai, which have a high number of cases and also function as a referral center, have 22% residential.
Tuticorin (19%), Coimbatore (17), Tirunelveli (16) and Madurai (13%) reported hospital occupancy above the country’s average.
