Chennai: The ICMR National Virology Institute on Wednesday confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant in Tamil Nadu.
The patient was a 47-year-old man traveling to Chennai from Nigeria through Doha on December 10.
Patients were not in isolation because he had not traveled from a high-risk country.
The state tracks close contact.
On Tuesday, the Directorate of Public Health and Medical Prevention announced that at least six of his relatives were infected.
One more co-passenger tested positive on Wednesday.
Co-passengers are residents of Valasaravakkam in Chennai.
One of the infected 16 years old.
The others have taken two doses of vaccines.
“Everyone has a mild infection, and their health condition is stable,” said Minister of Health MA Subramanian.
