Udhagamandalam: A new technique called ‘Nailing Tank Technique’ is used at the slope of the KodapPamund on the Ooty-Kotagiri highway, to stabilize the slopes and prevent soil erosion by building sustainable vegetation on the slopes by hydro nursery.
Public Works of State and Minister of Highways E V Velu inaugurated work for this on Wednesday.
This technique, employed for the first time in the state, will also help provide a slope of an environmentally friendly appearance.
Geogrid which will be installed in the process will stabilize the ground.
“The new technique is introduced in accordance with the instructions of the Minister of Chief.
The aim is to prevent landslides that often occur in the slopes of vulnerable in nilgiris during the rainy season,” said Minister.
4,170 locations have been identified throughout the state as vulnerable to landslides, he said.
Which, 284 is in the Nilgiris district.
49 284 spots are located close to the highway.
A team of professors from IIT-Delhi has helped the government in implementing this technique.
“If the project is successful, technology will be extended to other hilly areas such as Kodaikanal, Jerkadu, and Bodimettu in the state,” Velu said.
This technology cost effective and save 50% of costs compared to the development of revetment on the slopes.
In addition, revetment cannot be built with a certain height, he said the Velu also launched a safety horn system on the corner of the Kodappamund hair-pin in Ooty.
The system uses radar and will remind vehicles that cross the bend of hairpins to avoid accidents.
