Tamil Nadu: urban poverty encourages children’s wedding cases

Chennai: In April 2020, after learning that the class X students who lived with his grandparents in Thiruvannimiyur would marry 42-year-old people, neighbors and friends warned activists who got a marriage to stop.
A few weeks later, a family that lived with a little grandmother’s income as domestic aid was transferred to Tiruvannamalai district.
The existence of the girl remains a mystery.
In July this year, a teacher from a corporate school in Chennai said some girls who came to receive class XII Mark they used ‘Mangalsutra’, after getting married for losing parents and low wedding livelihoods so far kuncitara.
With places such as Chennai, Tiruvalur, Kancheepuram, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy and Tirunelveli report an increase in evil practical prevalence, RTI data from the Directorate of Social Welfare shows the number of children’s marriage cases in TN in 2020 up 45% 2019.
Data received by activists S Social Prabakar shows 3,208 child marriages prevented in TN in 2020 compared to 2,209 cases in 2019.
“Urban poverty is the main reason for the increase in the case.
Community members who lack living in small houses in the colonies are moved like Semminer, afraid The safety of their girls, married them with young, “said a Devaneyan, an activist of the rights of children.
The government needs to activate the Village Level Children’s Protection Committee and the Environmental Level Children Protection Committee in this case, he added.
While some activists urged the Social Welfare Department to continue to monitor the girls who were saved from child marriages, others said school closure was another big problem.
“About 1% of students at our school are married during locking.
We came to find out only when they came to receive their sheets,” said a teacher from the City Corporation School.
Andrew Sepuraj, State Organizers Tamil Nadu Child Rights Watch, said that women’s girls have lost a safe place because of the closing of the school.
“When they spend more time on their cellphone at home, parents become suspicious and marry them, afraid of marriage between caste.” The number of elopement cases also increases, he added.
R Vidyasagar, a former child protection specialist with UNICEF, said the loss of livelihood has caused many people to marry their daughter.
“The taste is a person who lacks eating.
Sometimes Groom’s family also pays bribes for young brides.
Dowry is also lacking for small children.
The government has never bothered to find out the real reason for the child’s marriage.
Stopping marriage alone will not help.
They must bring people together with them by giving them an option and support of alternative livelihoods for girls, “he said.
