COIMBATORE: A man Chippiparai puppy that failed week-long intensive coaching in Tamil Nadu Forestry Training College at Theni is assisting Coimbatore woods division employees sniff out woods crimes.
Valavan (skilful) was among those four Chippiparai dogs that started training in the school in March.
The forest department also has recruited Kaduvan (tiger) to get Pollachi branch, Kaligan (skies ) to get Nilgiris branch and Athavai (female wolf ) to get Gudalur branch ) “The dogs failed obedience training at the initial stage and sniffing training at the next stage.
They had been passed over to the woods divisions a couple of days back.
They are able to sniff out sandalwood, oak timber, ganja, ivory, and deer horn, uncooked skin and meat of wild creatures,” said assistant conservator of forests M Senthilkumar.
A dog handler and his helper are focusing on Valavan in Boluvampatti forest range office.
“Native breeds need less maintenance in comparison to imported strains.
Chippiparai and Kombai excel at sniffing out woods crimes.
We’ll track Valavan’s functionality for a number of months and attract more sniffer dogs into the woods branch,” Senthilkumar added.
