Chennai: Madras High Court has refused to disturb the Tamil spell at Tamil Nadu temples under ‘Anna Tamil Archanai Scheme’, rejecting the argument that the chastity of the temple will be destroyed if it is not sung in Sanskrit.
Citing a 2008 assessment of the Division bench, the first bench Head of Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice P D Audikesavalu said it was not in Agamas or other religious scripts to ban Tamil spells in temples.
It refused to accept the pilpetitioner, the opinion of Rangarajan Narashiman that the country changed the practices of Hindu religious institutions in temples.
This is the choice of worshipers to find Archaun to do according to their wishes by shouting mantras both in Tamil or in Sanskrit, he said.
“Judicial discipline ordered that when a problem was decided, unless the situation had changed or the decision about this problem was given by the suspect because the assessment did not take into account the applicable law or the Superior Forum statement had intervened, this problem might not be reviewed,” the court said.
According to the applicant, most temples have been regulated in accordance with the principles of religion and have become an ancient tradition for spells to be sung in Sanskrit.
The chastity of the spell will be destroyed if it is not sung in Sanskrit, he said.
