Chennai: Tamil who lives in Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia in the heart of Mumbai, has appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to establish a free legal aid center, Tamil Bhavan and Cooperative Bank to help them.
They also urge the state government to expand support to children to continue their studies in Tamil media to graduation.
According to Mumbai Vizhithezhu Iakkam, there were 25 lakh people from Tamil Nadu who settled in Dharavi and another part of Maharashtra’s generation ago.
From them, nearly five lakh people still have their voting rights in their original places in Tamil Nadu.
“We ask the state government to facilitate Tamil who lives in Dharavi to run their franchise through postal elections.
With the absence of these provisions, many cannot use their voting rights,” said Srithar Thamizhan, head of the organizational coordinator.
He handed over the Memorandum to the Speaker of the Tamil Majelist MPPAVU on Sunday, looking for the intervention of the state government to protect their rights and create resource centers to maintain Tamil migrated to Maharashtra and other parts of the country to reach them during difficult times.
“We face a lot of problems during locking after the Pandemic Covi-19 outbreak.
If the government has information about Tamil who live outside the country, it will help us and the government to return to salvation in such circumstances,” he said.
He also appealed to the Government of TN to insist on a train operating more trains to Tamil Nadu, especially the southern district such as Tirunelveli and Tuticorin as the majority of them came from the area.
“It’s hard to get a community certificate in Maharashtra.
Even if we produce a certificate obtained in TN, it is not considered.
So, many have lost their educational opportunities and work.
The government must intervene with the Maharashtra government to find a solution for it, “Thamizhan said.
Many children in Dharavi can only speak Tamil.
They can’t read and write their mother tongue.
“The government must create infrastructure to help our children learn to read and write Tamil,” he added.
In memorandum, organizations indicate that Tamil is a media instruction to class VII.
Therefore, many children cannot continue their studies in their mother tongue further and out.
“We ask the government to create infrastructure in Dharavi to help students continue their studies in Tamil to graduation,” he said.
Likewise, the association urged the TN government to establish a free legal aid center and Tamil Bhavan to expand the assistance needed to Tamil who lived in a generation.
