Telangana: RGUKT mulls entrance amid sea of 10-GPAs

HYDERABAD: With close to 2.1 lakh students securing 10-GPA in the SSC examinations, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), Basar is mulling conducting an entrance test for this year’s admissions.

The institute said that for its 1,000 to 1,500 seats, there are scores of students with 10-GPA as a result of internal assessments in the wake of SSC exams being cancelled due to the pandemic.
“With lakhs of students getting a 10-GPA, there will be many ties.
Instead of deserving students getting the seats, they might go to the eldest candidates as age is one of the criteria to allot a seat,” said an official, adding that even parents were demanding an entrance test for admission.

The official said that as per the institute’s policy, if two students secure the same GPA, mathematics marks are considered and the seat is allotted to the one with higher marks.
If math marks are also equal, then physics marks are considered, followed by chemistry, English and other subjects.
If all marks are the same, then age is considered and the seat is allotted to the eldest student, the official added.
The institute completed admissions based on SSC marks last year despite the cancellation of exams but far fewer students had a 10-GPA then.
However, according to the institute, the quality of students was not up to the institution’s standards as schools tend to be more liberal while awarding internal marks.
To conduct an entrance exam, the institute will have to either amend the RGUKT Act — which prohibits conducting an entrance exam for admissions — or bring out a special government order.
A detailed report on admissions is already said to have been prepared and submitted by RJUKT vice-chancellor (in-charge) Rahul Bojja to the state government.
“The best option we have is to consider TS-Polycet ranks as this exam is conducted based on class 10 syllabus.
Conducting a separate exam is another option but there are some constraints, infrastructural and financial,” said an official adding that they were inclined to consider Polycet ranks for admissions.
A decision is expected to be taken in around a month as the institute will also have to wait for SSC results of AP with 15% of seats reserved for students from the state.
Likewise, the institute will also have to consider students from other states and NRIs.
Commissioner for collegiate and technical education Navin Mittal said that although there was a discussion to consider Polycet ranks for admissions, the institute is yet to inform them about its decision.
“If the question is whether to conduct an entrance exam or use Polycet (ranks), Polycet is definitely a better option,” Mittal said.
