Hyderabad: Archaeologists have found fourth-century stone plaques from Mahishasuramardhini Vishnukundin period in the Nalgonda district.
Mini stone placards from Mahishasuramardhini were reported from the outskirts of Panagal, a temple city in the Nalgonda district.
E SIVA Nagi Reddy, Archaeologist, along with Syakumar, an epigraphy and historian based in Nalgonda, examining statues in detail.
“Plaque is restored by Dandempalli Village Farmers located on Jalan Panagal-Kattangoor at a distance of three km from Panagal.
They find back when digging channels for agricultural purposes.
It has many archaeological and historical meanings and represents the style of art and Iconography Wisnukundin,” said Nagi Reddy.
The plaque carved from soap rocks represented Dewi Mahishasuramardini who was involved in killing the devil Mahishasura in the form of buffalo.
“He was seen trampling the Devil’s head with his left hand and turned his tail and at the same time stabbing Trident to his head.
Two other arms held Sankhu and Chakra.
Simple curtains, ornaments and headgears such as turban clearly reveal early iconography,” said Nagi Reddy .
According to him, the corrupted terracotta image of the third century Mahishasuramardini was reported from Veerapuram in Kurnool Regency and other small stone statues from Dewi from Kesaragutta.
Sriramoju Haragopal, a historian Kothha Telangana Charitra Brindam, said it belonged to the Wisnukundin period and said that the same picture was in a larger size carved on the Temple Basar stone.
Nagi Reddy said he currently found a lot of historical meaning because it presents a very necessary source for the history of the early Medieval Telaangana art.
