New Delhi: Telecom (DOT) department has extended the duration of archiving calls and customer internet usage records for up to two years from one year for security reasons.
Amendments in the license were issued on December 21 and extended to other forms of telecommunications permits on December 22.
“Licensee must maintain all commercial notes / record details calls / recording details of exchange / recording of IP details with records to communication exchanged on the network.
The record must be archived for at least two years for supervision by the licensing for security reasons …” said Dot Round.
Telecommunications companies can destroy the data stored afterwards if there is no direction from the point afterwards.
Circular said the amendment was needed in “public interests or for the benefit of state security or for the right telegraph behavior”.
Amendments mandate telecommunications telecommunications companies to maintain customer data records, including login details and logout from all customers for services provided such as internet access, email, internet telephone services such as calls made of cellular applications or WiFi for at least two years.
