Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has objected to the proposal to draw Godavari water from Icchampally in the state.
The National Water Development Corporation (NWDC) has proposed to draw 247 TMCFF from Gayuvari and divert it to Krishna and Pennar Basins as part of the project to connect Godavari and Cauvery.
“During the NWDC public body meeting on Wednesday, the Telangana Government believes that there are no excess water available at Godavari in Icchampally.
To confirm this, we have suggested conducting hydrological studies to find out the availability of agreed water,” a senior official from the irrigation department Telangana, who participated in a virtual meeting, told TII.
The state government has told the NWDC that they opposed the proposal in principle because the center had to consider diverting Godavari water from icchampally only after meeting Telangana’s requirements.
The center said the link from Icchampalli would also benefit the Telangana area which was depressed in the water on the link channel route compared to other regions.
According to the proposal, every day 2.2 TMCFF from Godavari will first be transferred to Krishna at Nagarjuna Sagar and from there will be taken to Pennar during the Southwest Monsun.
NWDA has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) to connect the two rivers that are estimated to cost Rs 85,000 Crore.
Tamil Nadu CM Stalin has written to Telangana and the AP government in October last year seeking their support because it would help the state, especially Chennai.
Stalin said that the state has an 83 TMCFT allocation from the AP government.
Official sources said a meeting had been carried out by the task force at Godvari-Cauvery connected the DPRS on September 2020 looking for AP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka comments.
In the meeting, the center said that the transfer of water from Godavari basin from the part allocated AP or Telangana to Krishna or the Peneknek basin would belong to each country and the same thing can be utilized according to their planning.
“Only non-intilized water will be taken for diversion
