Thane: The police have confiscated around four tons of beef suspected of Naupada in Thane City and arrested a man involved in transportation, an official said on Friday.
The defendant has been identified as Lala Abdul Sayyed, 55, a Kurla resident in Mumbai, he said.
The meat was confiscated on Thursday morning and then sent for analysis, officers from the Naupada police station added.
A Bajrang Dal Acticist, who was walking in the morning, saw a truck parked on the side of the road near the Nitin Company Junction around 5am.
He also found a man moving suspiciously and drained the water from the vehicle, followed what he knew the police, he said.
A police team reached the place and seized the alleged beef, estimated to be worth 9.90 lakh.
The truck was worth around RS 7 Lakh, it was also confiscated, police official said.
A violation under the IPC Section 429 (damage by killing or injuring livestock), part of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act (Amendment), 1995 and motor vehicle laws have been registered.
The police tried to find out the source and purpose of the meat confiscated.
