Thane: Six people including parents from a newborn girl had been arrested in Thane for allegedly trying to sell babies worth Rs 1,50 lakh, said a police officer on Saturday.
The police got a tip-off that the couple from Bhiwandi in this district tried to sell their newborn girl, said Senior Inspector Anil Deshmukh Crime Unit 1.
The couple seemed to really need money, he said.
Police officials, disguised as interested buyers, contacted intermediaries involved in this issue and negotiating prices at Rs 1.5 lakh.
On Friday, the police team arrested the parents and four others from the place near the Thane Collector office when they took the money and handed the child to the bait customers, said Inspector Deshmukh.
The baby girl was born in a government hospital in Bhiwandi on December 4, he said.
He was sent to a child care center in Dombivli after the parents were arrested.
The case under IPC Part 370 (Trafficking Person) was registered at the Rabodi police station here, the official said.
The accusation was identified as the father of Shakil Ansari (37) for the driver of a pedicab, Mumtaz Ansari (29), alleged intermediary Zeenath Rashid Khan (22) and Vasim Isaque Shaikh (36); Kaynath Rizwan Khan (30) who is the girl’s aunt and an 18-year-old young man who is his cousin.
Probe is further active.
