Ghaziabad: A 20-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan in a house in Kavi Nagar on Saturday night.
His family accused him of being harassed by his husband and in-laws for Mahar.
Police said that the deceased had been identified as Chanchal aka Sakshi.
His body has been sent for autopsy and the report is awaited.
His parents said that Sakshi married Anuj on April 26, 2021.
Anuj’s family had demanded Rs 20 Lakh and Scorpio vehicles, but they could not fulfill demand.
Surendra Singh, the father of the deceased, told TII that around 1.55 in the morning on Saturday, we knew that Sakshi had locked himself in a room and he tried to kill himself.
“We immediately left our house in Hapur but when we reached his in-laws, we knew that Anuj took him to the hospital.
When we arrived at the hospital, the doctor said that he had died,” he said, adding that Sakshi complained several times that Husband and his in-laws were used to beat and torture him mentally for dowry.
“I suspect that Anuj and his family killed him and then hung his body to continue as suicide,” he said.
Anshu Jain, Circle Officer Police Office Kavi Nagar, told Ti that around 2am on Sunday, we got information that a woman killed himself.
Immediately, the police team reached the place and took him to the nearest hospital for a medical examination, but the doctor expressed his death.
“On the basis of complaints, a FIR has been registered against Anuj and his family under the 304B (Dowry Death), 498A (husband or relative of a woman who subjects to atrocities) from the Indian criminal code and the relevant dowry parts act,” said Jain.
