Ghaziabad / Noida: While mukormycosis (black mushroom) generally targets the eyes and brain, which is late a large number of patients coming to hospitals in Ghaziabad with their affected jaws.
Senior surgeon Dr.
BP Tyagi, who has treats around 60 black mushroom patients in a harsh hospital in Raj Nagar, saying so far, 12 patients like that come to the hospital and in all cases, their jaws must be removed.
Black mushrooms spread quickly in post-covid patients with high blood sugar (more than 700) and affect the nose, eyes and brain.
However, in patients who have sugar levels around 300, infections spread slowly and swallow the jaw bones and teeth.
Dr.
Tyagi said, “One thing that has common in all these patients is that they have high blood sugar (under 300), but not an uncontrolled level (700-800).
Of the 12 patients, 10 are men and two are Women.
While one of these patients is still in the hospital, others are being treated through OPD.
“Contrary to the rapid spread of fungal diseases in the eyes and brain, it is a slow process when the jaw is affected.
“This generally affects the upper jaw, but I treat patients whose lower jaws are affected.
The first indication of this infection loosens teeth.
The incubation period of fungal infection in the jaw is about two weeks.
In most cases, a patient does not take it seriously and start home-based treatment.
“Dr.
Tyagi said, adding that this disease was detected through CT scans.
Dr.
Tyagi said that black mushrooms not only rot tooths and affect the jawbone but it made it necessary to remove the jaw.
If it is not removed, this disease will spread to all patient’s facial bones.
“It’s like cancer, even if one particle remains, it will begin to spread again.
Therefore, all areas infected with black mushrooms must be deleted, he added.
Another reason is the use of shoots that are not accompanied by the nose while doing Covid tests and high intake From Zinc and Iron tablets.
If the buds are not stalled and restore the nostrils, then the black fungal infection can begin there and then spread to other parts.
In addition to having high sugar, the level of ferritin is also very high in the patient.
A patient with a jaw black mushroom must be given 90 amphotericin-b injections in 45 days.
Whereas in the case of eyes and nose, injections must be given for 20 to 22 days.
After the deletion of the infected jaw, the patient’s survival opportunity is 70%, while it is 50% in the case of the eye and only 5 % In the case of the brain.
Meanwhile, the doctor in Noida said that some patients came with complaints related to eyes, cheeks and jaws After recovery, but teeth extraction has not been done in the district.
Dr.
Amitabh Malik, an ENT head specialist at Paras Hospitals in Gurgaon, “Of the 50 patients I saw in my OPD, the jaw was found to be affected in about 10% to 15% of cases.
The patient did not have a jaw infection when they came to the hospital but developed it later .
in most cases, doctors tried to remove the affected area through surgery to prevent further spread.
An obturator is set in the jaw to fill the gap.
“Strengthening of these facts, the Director Gims Brigadier (retired) Dr Rakesh Gupta said,” eye infections, flavor sick, inflammation of ENT and the problems associated with pharynx are a common problem that survives during recovery.
This is also an initial symptom for most patients.
