The climate crisis places Indian children in ‘very high risk’: UNICEF

New Delhi: India is among 33 “very high risk” countries where children are at risk of experiencing climate change that affects their health and education, the new UNICEF report said.
It warns repeated flooding and air pollution, as environmental shocks, which leads to harmful socio-economic consequences for children and women.
The first child’s climate risk index by UNICEF occupies India in 26 which is vulnerable and among the four South Asian countries where children will face the most significant negative impacts on climate change.
Besides India, other South Asian countries are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan with rank 14, 15 and 15 each.
33 countries “very high-risk”, said the report, collectively emissions only 9% of Global CO2 emissions, while the 10 highest transmitter countries together accounted for almost 70% of global emissions.
For example, China ranks over accounting for 30.3% of Gloval CO2 emissions, followed by 14.6% of the United States.
India accounts for 7.1%.
In addition, Nepal and Sri Lanka are one of the top 65 countries that have the most impact globally with ranked 51 and 61 each.
This report occupies the country’s rank based on climate and environmental shock exposure, such as cyclones and heat waves, and their vulnerability to the shock, based on their access to important services.
