Thiruvananthapuram: Animal welfare organization and community feeders come across the instance of wild dogs and some pet dogs infected with the fatal canine disempered virus (CDV).
The death of wild dogs because this virus has been reported from regions such as Kovalam while cases are also reported in areas such as Attingal and Pappanamcode.
Corporate officials handle wild dog management confirm that the CDV case is widely reported in the city.
One dangerous aspect of this disease is a way in which infected animals continue to spill viruses even after recovery in some rare cases.
Viruses spread with aerosol transmissions.
“Wild dogs have a habit of sniffing at home gates and pet dogs usually chasing them and sniffing the gate.
It will expose dogs to infection if they are not vaccinated,” said the veterinarian.
The initial symptoms include the release of pus from the eyes and nose and then dogs suffer from uncontrolled muscle jerks which show that the nervous system has been affected.
“This is a very fatal and spread disease quickly.
Wild dogs are rarely vaccinated and this results in high infection opportunities.
