Bhubaneswar: Death because the accident in Odisha increased 8.87% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the appropriate period in 2020.
The total number of accidents had increased by almost 12% in the first three months of this year as against the same period last year.
The data distributed by the Crime Branch of Odisha said the number of accidents rose from 2881 in the first quarter of 2020 to 3225 during the same period this year.
While 1353 people were killed in the accident in the first quarter of 2020, the number of victims rose to 1473 between January and March this year.
“We hope that the decline in accident deaths in the second quarter (April-June) remembers the weekend shutdown and locks that come into force in April-May,” said a Senior Crime Branch officer.
Analysis of road accidents in the first quarter 2020 and 2021 shows Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Khurda, Angul, Balangsore, Bargarh, Balalangir, Boudh, Cuttack, JagatsingHpur, Coraput and Nabarangapur reported an increase in deaths from accidents so far.
The level of fatality in an accident on the road in the state fell by almost 11% by 2020 compared to 2019.
A total of 4738 people were killed in a road accident in the state last year due to 5333 deaths in 2019.
Death fell due to induced covid-locking and restrictions on vehicle movements last year.
The state transportation department said the steps were taken to reduce accident death.
The department has asked the district collector to install CCTV cameras on the stretch of accidents and blackspots on the highway.
The government said the collectors must implement the CCTV supervision system from the District Mineral Fund (DMF) or rope in the company for the company’s social responsibility funds (CSR).
“District collectors will set targets to reduce deaths from accidents by 10% by 2021.
Therefore, the action plan will be developed in consultation with SPS, RTOS, agents of road owners and NGOs.
Enforcement of the incident side and drive drives will be intensified.
