Itbuna: The death toll from floods hammered Northeast Brazil rose to 20 Monday, because the Governor of the State of Bahia said that the worst disaster in the history of the country and the savior preparing for more rain in the future.
Most of Bahia, home to around 15 million people, has suffered intermittent flooding for weeks, after a long drought gave way to record rain.
The flood in several regions was increasingly intensive on Christmas and early Christmas on Christmas after a pair of dams gave way, send residents to scramble for a higher place.
Rescue workers patrolled small Dinghies around the city of Itabuna, in South Bahia, revoked residents from their homes, including some who fled through the second floor window.
Governor Bahia Rui Costa said on Twitter that 72 cities were in an emergency.
“Unfortunately, we live through the worst disaster that has ever happened in Bahia’s history,” he wrote.
Manfredo Santana, a lieutenant-colonel in the Bahia firefighting corps, told Reuters that emergency workers had saved 200 people in the only three nearby cities.

“The rescue team must retreat at certain times.” The Bahia Civil Defense Agency said on Monday afternoon that 20 people had died in 11 separate cities.
The O Globo newspaper, quoted a state fire fighting official, said that the authorities monitored 10 additional dams for any signs they could collapse.
The attention of public infrastructure and city planning came in just a few years after the collapse of the mining dam in neighboring Minas Gerais State killed around 270 people.
In comments broadcast on television, Costa, Governor of Bahia, linked a chaotic scene in the inner “mistake that had been made for years.”
