The development of salt land may be stopped: MNT

Thane: Maharashtra Cabinet Minister for Housing, Jitendra Awhad, on Thursday, opposed to moving the center to exploit commercial land Pan Salt Dotting Mumbai and Thane Coastlines, said whatever construction there would disrupt the flow of natural water and cause flooding in cities.
Awhad spoke to Toi with the possibility of the 2016 revival of proposals entered by the central government before the state government to exploit this vast land collectively stretched more than 5,500 hectares in Mumbai and Thane.
It was studied that the idea was to free this land for the construction of a commercial and housing complex after MMRDA was asked to hire agents to explore feasibility.
“PAN land salt is under the central government but every development that will be made to them here will need permission from Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the State Housing Department.
I discussed this issue with the chairman of the Minister of UDDHAV Thackeray and Environment Minister of Environment Aaditya Thackeray and we with Round voice decided to save this salt salt land and reject any proposal for construction on them, “Awhad said.
“The city of Mumbai Island and suburban, including the far suburb of Vasai-Varar, has a large salt pot that acts as a barrier to hold the sea water from rushing in the interior and also manages an underground water table.
Every step of disturbing this can bring havoc for Mumbai and Thane, “reasoned.
Meanwhile, activists welcomed the steps that would help save salt land in Thane and Mumbai because they were looted with the name of development.
