LONDON: Cricket has a deep problem with racism and public funding must be limited unless the game can prove that he cleanses his actions, the British Parliament Committee said in a report published on Friday.
The Digital Parliamentary, Culture, Media and Sports Committee called on quarterly reports and monitoring indicators developed by the UK and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
“We recommend that the government ensure that public funds in the future for cricket depend on continuous progress, can be proven in getting rid of racism in the dressing room and at the booth,” said the report.
It adds that the two clubs Cricket County Yorkshire and the ECB will be invited to provide evidence about their progress in early 2022.
Former Cricketer Yorkshire Azeem Rafiq has described sports in the UK as full of racism and appeared in front of the committee in November of inhumane treatment suffer at the district level.
Rafiq, former England captain under the 19s of Pakistani descent, had previously talked about experiencing racial and isolated and humiliated – even considering to kill himself.
“I lost my career for racism,” he said at that time.
The Julian Knight Committee Chair said Rafiq’s testimony convinced members there was a “endemic problem throughout the cricket”.
“We have been surprised by the people used in correspondence with us after hearing,” he added.
“That, along with the story run in the media to discredit it, shows that eradicating racism from the game will be a long and difficult road.” However, this is a river area for cricket in this country.
Those who love and support the game are part of the solution and must play their role.
“This scandal has shocked British sports and the cost of sponsors of Yorkshire and the right to entertain England internationally, and preached some of the biggest names in British cricket.
The Chairman of New Yorkshire, Kamlesh Patel promised” seismic changes “when he took over.” Public funding for cricket must depend on.
In real leadership and progress by the ECB to overcome disgusting behavior, “Knight said.” We put the ECB on the notifications we expected.
Updates are sent to the committee about the progress made.
