Mumbai: Senior citizens contributed 84% of Covid-19 Mumbai’s death in January so far, made a proportion of deaths that were much higher than during the second wave.
But the third wave driven by Omicron has claimed fewer lives (159), much lower than the top of the second wave.
According to BMC data, of the 159 deaths, 134 people above 60 years, 20 (13%) are between 40 and 60, and five (around 3%) are below 40.
The numbers indicate that up to 86% have one or more underlying health conditions; Many are also not vaccinated or some are vaccinated.
In comparison, during the second wave in April-May last year, the proportion of senior citizens who surrendered to Covid each dropped to 65% and 60%.

Arpita Ddiedy, the head of critical treatment at Hiranandani Hospital, said that they had recorded six deaths, but all of them were among the elderly patients with the underlying conditions.

Shashank Joshi, a member of the state government assignment unit in Covid-19, also said that senior citizens need to remain vigilant even if Covid triggers mild symptoms.
“Those who are not vaccinated, some vaccinated or very immunocompromised must continue to remain very careful,” added Dr.
