Ahmedabad: Two men killed the old Ghatlodia couple who hoped to take substantial booty on the day they hit, Dhanteras, but managed to find only Rs 500 after the massacre.
Ahmedabad’s crime branch officer revealed that information on Tuesday and said that they had arrested the killers.
Dayanand and Vijyalakshmi Shanbaugh, aged 90 and 80, were killed on November 2 at their home in Flat Parasmani.
According to the police, the murderers were Mukut Hapgadada, 19, and Eeman Topno, 26, both residents of Khunti Regency from Jharkhand and construction workers.
Police said both of them really needed money so they decided to find a vulnerable target.
“Defendant went bankrupt because they had sent money to their families on November 1.
They focused on the building because only five of the total 12 flats were occupied,” said a police officer.
“Topno lives on the ground floor to keep watching, while Hapgadada goes looking for easy prey.” The officer said that Hapgadada saw the door of Shanbaug’s house open and he crawled inside.
When Delayanand saw him and asked who he was, Hapgadada silenced him to record his neck.
He then slitted Vijyalyakshmi’s throat before he could even register what had happened to her husband, the officer said.
Then Hapgadada began searching the house but only found Rs 500.
When the couple began to blew heavy, he ran down and he and Topno left the building quickly, police said.
After murder, city crime branch was issued to investigate this case.
Sources at the Crime Branch Branch said that because there was no CCTV camera in the area, the police relied on CCTV cameras in the nearest location to capture suspicious characters.
Local informant networks are also activated.
