Brussels: The ministers of European EU houses will discuss the wave of illegal border crossings from Belarus to the Lithuanian EU member country at an extraordinary meeting on August 18, the Slovenian European Union Presidency on Friday.
Representatives of the Frontex The European Union and Europol border agency will also take part in video conferencing, according to a letter by Slovenia to EU diplomats seen by Reuters.
“With the situation at the Lithuanian-Belarus border, the EU has been under serious security threats and is a witness of a state-sponsored weapon from illegal migration in Belarus,” said the text.
Slovenia urged to act, said one purpose of the meeting was to approve the steps to protect parts of the EU external border and to continue to support Lithuania.
The European Union summoned Belarusian envoys in Brussels on Wednesday and held talks with the Iraqi government after accusing Belarus using illegal migrants, mostly Iraqis, as political weapons of European Union sanctions imposed on Minsk.
UE Foreign Policy Head Josep Borrell and other EU officials also sought solutions with the Iraqi government which could include suspension of flights from Baghdad to Minsk.
