Cap-Haitien, Haiti: A large-scale gas truck explosion killed at least 62 people in Haiti on Tuesday, after observers clog vehicles to collect spilled fuel – valuable commodities in a country disturbed by acute deficiencies.
The explosion in the second Cap-Haiti City in Haiti was the last disaster to hit the caribbean that was discouraged, met with gang violence and political paralysis.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry visited the tragedy, he said his heart was “damaged” after meeting with some of the injured in a local hospital.
He then tweeted that emergency funds had been released to help deal with the tragedy.
The remnants of trucks that were charred sitting in the Samarie Built-up area on the northern coast of the country.
The surrounding buildings burned and scars in the explosion.
The crowd gathered at the location, where several dead were left on the road in the body’s bag.
“We have now counted 62 deaths,” said Deputy Mayor Patrick Almonor, adding that the authorities were still looking for victims in the nearest buildings.
Almonor described a terrible scene, said he had seen dozens of people “burning life” and that “it is impossible to identify them.” The truck was believed to have flipped after the driver loses control when turning to avoid a motorcycle taxi.
The Haitian Civil Protection Department confirmed the truck fell – and that passing people had rushed to collect gas that fled, rare commodities amid severe fuel shortages caused by the grip of gangs in the Port-au-Prince capital.
“After this accident, civilians took the opportunity to collect gas by filling out emergency containers – causing a terrible explosion that caused many victims and the main material damage,” said Jerry Chandler’s civil protection director told AFP.
Almonor said about 40 houses in the area were also damaged, but there was no detail available on the possibility of the victim in it.
The University of Justinien’s hospital was overwhelmed with injured patients in the explosion.
“We don’t have the ability to treat the number of serious burning people,” said a nurse to AFP.
“I’m worried we won’t be able to save them all.” A doctor at the hospital told the magik local radio station that two people had died there and that 40 other patients were seriously injured.
“People burn on more than 60 percent of their bodies,” he said.
After visiting the hospital, Henry said: “Broken hearted, I saw the critical condition of several compatriots.” The prime minister flew accompanied by extra health workers, and said in a tweet he had revealed “solidarity with a grieving family.” He previously promised the hospital field would be quickly used to help care for the explosion.
Henry – who had led the country since July after President Jovenel Moise was killed in a mysterious plot that was still mysterious – stating the national mourning period after the explosion.
Haiti has never produced enough electricity to meet the needs of the population.
Even in part of the capital, the government-managed Haiti electric utility only provides, mostly, a few hours of power a day.
Those who are able to spend depend on expensive generators, who do not help in the face of fuel shortages caused by gangs that block access to the country’s oil terminal in the capital and the edges.
In the past few months, more than a dozen vehicles carrying fuel have been attacked by gangs that demand ransom for driver liberation.
Demonstrators took to the streets recently on Monday to protest the increase in gasoline prices.
The lack of fuel is also about water access, in a country where many people rely on private companies to send water with trucks to the home system.
And without a guarantee of stable strength or running water, health care providers have been forced to play their services drastically.
Haiti which was unstable chronically also plunged into a new political crisis with Moise’s murder.
Four senior Haitian Haitian officials had been detained and several dozen were arrested in connection with the investigation.
But five months after the murder, doubt still ended with who ordered the attack.
