Manila: Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he resigned the plan announced to nominate vice presidents in the election next year and will retire from politics after his tenure ended.
Duterte announced a surprise decision on Saturday after accompanying his former head, Senator Bong left, who instead proposed his own nomination for vice president at the election center.
The Philippine President was limited by the constitution for a period of six years and opponents said they would question the legality of Vice President Duterte which was announced before the Supreme Court.
Duterte served in 2016 and launched hard action on illegal drugs that left more than 6,000 small suspects who died and worried the Western government and human rights groups.
The International Criminal Court is investigating murder.
