Colombo: Top Sri Lankan Court here has been sentenced to death of a former prison commissioner for the Welikada prison riot in 2012 which killed at least 27 inmates.
The Colombo High Court trial on Wednesday found former Supervisor Emil Ranjan Lamahewa guilty and passed the death penalty.
The first defendant in this case, then the Police Narcotics Bureau Inspector, Neomal Rangajeewa was released from all charges.
This case was heard for almost three years before three members’ benches.
Lamahewa and Rangajeewa were arrested in March 2018.
The defendants were charged with 33 counts, including the murder of eight inmates chosen by the defendants in the prison industry, conspiracies to kill and illegally collect many people while the conflict was being pressured.
On November 9, 2012, at least 27 prisoners were killed while more than 20 others were injured when detainees were in arrangement in their full prison objections with searches without notice by police special task forces to strip and cell phones in prison.
