Karwar: The state government has provided a green signal to land acquisition for civil airports in the village of Alageri near Karwar.
A total of 87.14 hectares will be obtained for this purpose, the notification issued by the state government.
Civil airports are being developed with the help of the Indian Navy which the airbase will appear there under the second phase of the Seabird project.
The state government has requested the Department of Defense to expand the naval airbase facilities to civilians, to increase tourism in the area.
Although the Navy has agreed to this, it has placed the condition that the additional land needed to build a civil terminal and the runway must be provided by the state government.
A MoU was signed last year between the 2013 Karnataka Department of Defense and Government, the notice said.
Assistant Commissioner Kumta and Deputy Commissioner Uttara Kannada have the power to acquire land.
They must ensure that all the amount needed for compensation is ready.
Officials must also confirm that the same land was not previously obtained, the notice said.
Although there is resistance from a few quarters for land acquisition, most are reported to be willing to give their land.
The airport is only 35 km from the Goa border and a large number of tourists are expected to come to Karwar airport because the cave airport is crowded and will shift to the Mopa in North Goa immediately.
