New Delhi: Bill to restore the rights of the state government to compile their own OBC list for reservations in employment and educational institutions unanimously skipped by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, even when the government remains non-committee to remove 50% ceiling and quota Caste-based census.
Constitutional bills (amendments 127), which are also forwarded in a round voice by Lok Sabha on Tuesday, and will now become law after the assistant president, finally passed after division voting with 187 members of choosing it and no one opposed.
Treasury and opposition parties tried to score political points for more than five hours of debate, which also saw many opposition members demanding the elimination of 50% stamp, caste-based census and even reservations in the private sector.
BJP accused Congress for not doing enough for SCS, STS and OBC despite being in the office for decades.
Opposition, while welcoming the bill, said BJP is eyeing the upcoming election in Uttar Pradesh and other countries, and even using “Kamandal” against “Mandal” (commission) in the past.
BJP members such as Sushil Kumar Modi, Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav, among others, questioned the failure of the Government of Congress in a row to empower SCS, STS, OBC and more economically weaker parts.
The government understands the “sentiment” behind the call to eliminate the lid of 50%, which was put down by the Supreme Court 30 years ago, but needs to be studied and discussed further, said Social Justice Virender Kumar.
