Brussels: EU peak official on Wednesday advising 27 member countries to wean themselves from natural gas not only to accelerate the transition to clean energy but also to make players block more independent in the world.
On the night of the European Union Summit centered on the energy crisis, the President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen told the legislators that since the 90% of the gas blocked from the gas – most of the Russian strategic rival – “this makes us vulnerable.” As a result he wants the EU to double the fast transition to clean energy from the wind and sun, which can be produced domestically and will ultimately be much cheaper than imported fossil fuels.
The recent surge in gas prices has hit the most vulnerable European Union family first, and Von Der Leyen again made calls in member countries to ensure taxes and levies on energy can be adapted to protect the poorest UE citizens.
But Von Der Leyen both reached the theme of strategic interests became less dependent on imports.
Even if a partner country like Norway increases its exports to blocks to meet increasing demand, one major player does not.
“While (Russia) Gazprom has respected its long-term contract with us, it did not respond to higher demand, as happened in previous years.
So Europe is currently too dependent on gas,” he said.
As a result, the transition to clean energy is not only needed to be neutral energy in the mid-century.
“The transition to clean energy is not only vital for our planet.
It is also important for our economy and for resistance to energy price shocks,” he said.
It was a covert reference to leaders such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who specifically blamed the increase in energy prices on the planned green agreement of the European Commission.
This project aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions up to 55% by 2030 and make carbon block neutral in 2050.
