Afghanistan: Afghanistan requires urgent and sustainable support from the international community to prevent a larger humanitarian crisis, said the Head of the UN refugee body said, the warning of global implications if it happened.
“The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan remains desperate,” said UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi in a statement after a three-day visit to the South Asian country.
“If public and economic services collapse, we will see suffering, instability, and greater displacement both at home and abroad,” he added in Wednesday’s statement.
“Therefore, the international community must be involved with Afghanistan – and quickly – to prevent a much larger humanitarian crisis that not only has regional implications, but globally.” Even before the Taliban took over last month, Grandi said, more than 18 million Afghans, or about half a population, humanitarian assistance needed.
More than 3.5 million Afghans had been displaced in a country that fought against the drought and pandemic Covid-19.
Poverty and hunger have revolved since the Taliban takeover, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at the International Aid Conference this week that Afghanistan faced “the most dangerous hours”.
Donors at the conference promised more than $ 1.1 billion to help Afghanistan.
