Nagpur: With the advent of online payment services, Cyber crime cases have also increased throughout the country, and Nagpur is no exception.
In the past six years, from 2016 to September 2021, the number of such cases increased steadily, and it was the highest during the Covid-19 pandemic period, say reply to the RTI query provided by the branch of the police crime.
On the other hand, the detection rate is very low, with only 229 cases detected from 793 registered in six years.
This detection caused the order of 159 accused, but there was no information provided whether they were arrested or not.
Information in the RTI Act was provided by the assistant Commissioner-Cum-Public-Public Information Officer (PIO) of the crime in responding to a query by Veteran activist RTI Abhay Kolarkar.
Replies that were taken to 173 cases of cheating through various ways recorded in the last six.
year, while 82 cases are cheating online.
In the same period, 35 cases of online order fraud were reported and 63 cheating through debit and credit cards.
About 65 cases are registered for cheating through online banking.
Although RTI data was six years old, the Coronavirus pandemic period from March 2020 witnessed a steep increase in all cases associated with Cybercrime such as banking fraud and credit cards, and online ordering goods and materials.
In the pandemic period, only 16 cases were registered with those who spread fake news through social media, although hundreds of false posts were circulated on various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and others.
The amount involved in all types of cyber crime cases runs into crores, but because of the low detection rate and the absence of the right mechanism to prevent the incident, very few who succeed in regaining the money obtained with difficulty.
According to Kolarkar, even though the government sought the best to spread awareness among people regarding the risks involved in online financial transactions, very little attention to it.
The majority of victims fell to prey on false offers.
Police officials said most of the victims did not even advance to submit police complaints, capturing shame or because of the small amount of missing, and therefore the number of registered cases might not describe reality.
Police say almost every day all social media users are bombarded with hundreds of fake messages such as lotteries, where people are captivated in their greed for easy money.
They share all their details with strangers without verifying credentials.
They repent only after their money was reduced from their bank account.
The majority of victims of virtual world crimes are women and senior citizens, which are most vulnerable to such fraud, officials say.
