Nagpur: Data 2020 Crime National Records (NCRB) has shown that the city has the highest level of rape in Maharashtra (6.5 per one population of lakh), with Mumbai (3.8) and Pune (2.5) following it.
Nagpur also has the highest crime rate for women (75.3) in the state, followed by Mumbai (53.8) and Pune (44.1).
In cases related to the protection of children from sex (Pocso) of Act, 2015, Nagpur has the third highest crime rate in the country (16.0) after Indore (17.8) and Lucknow (16.8).
While NCRB data – especially related to foul violations – creating ripple, revealing allegations of doubtful differences, activists feel the city may not be expected, but still better than places like Delhi, where cruelty towards women are things normal.
Police Chief Amitesh Kumar said women’s security and safety was the top priority in his vision.
“We continue to strive to make the city safer for women through various proactive steps, such as Damini team dedicated to them,” he added.
Social activist Neelima Deshmukh, a senior colleague at the Indian Social Sciences Council, said the city was not safe after late at night, such as Mumbai.
“Police may try to make this place safer but citizens, especially children, must be disciplined and do not go beyond,” he said.
Penitentiary and activists HEMA Muniyar said Nagpur was safer than other metropolitan cities, but vulnerable places should be avoided.
Additional Public Prosecutor Jyoti Vajani, who has confidence in some cases of rape, said Nagpur may be unsafe after a certain time that day.
He expressed doubts about whether women would be able to move freely, feel safe at night in the city.
