Mumbai: superinfection, which usually affects them with a very depressed immune system like people who live with HIV / AIDS or organ patients with organs, are increasingly seen in patients who have recovered from Covid-19.
In particular, many contracted this rare co-infection even though it was not ‘bombed’ with steroids or treated because of diabetes, underlining the possibility of Covid-19 itself causing a large weakening of immune.
In a recent case, a 66-year-old patient was treated at Lilavati Hospital with complaints of shortness of breath and a fever a week after he recovered and dismissed.
He came with a really white lung as if covid returned.
But after running an investigation, it turned out to be the case of cytomegalovirus pneumonia infection (CMV).
“We usually see CMV in patients who have undergone organ or parent cell transplants.
We were surprised to see it in Covid cases,” said Vasant Nagvekar’s infectious disease.
About six CMV cases like that, rarely seen in individuals with a healthy immune system, have been recorded among post-covid patients in Mumbai.
At least one has given up on him.
Similarly, Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP), serious fungal infections that cause inflammation and buildup of fluid in the lungs, has been seen in more than 6-7 post-covid cases.
Until now, PCP is usually seen in HIV / AIDS patients whose CD4 count fell below 200.
The fungal infection called mucormycosis that appears as one of the main opportunistic infections is not the only one that affects the patient, which adds that they fight other co-infection batteries Among patients who restored covid, including lung aspergillosis related to Covid-19, Herpes reactivation, pseudomonas bacterial infection and Candida Auris, a global fungal which is considered a global threat.
According to nagvestar, the doctor must remain vigilant and open to the possibility that this rare co-infection can hit even those who do not have HIV history or undergo transplantation.
“If Post Covid patients return with fever, shortness of breath and deteriorating CT scans and X-rays, this opportunistic infection must be suspected,” he said.
Intensivist at Hiranandani Hospital Arpita Ddiedy said while 70% -80% who had returned with opportunistic infections have been treated with steroids in their observations, the role of infection must definitely learn.
