JOHANNESBURG: FW De Klerk, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela and as president of the last apartheid South Africa oversee the end of the country’s white minority government, has died at the age of 85 years.
De Klerk died after the battle against cancer in his house in the Fresnaye Cape Town area, a Foundation spokesman Fw Dler Klerk confirmed on Thursday.
De Clerk who was in his speech to the South African parliament on February 2, 1990, announced that Mandela would be released from prison after 27 years.
The announcement shocked the state which for decades has been ridiculed and approved by most of the world for the brutal system of racial discrimination known as apartheid.
