Chennai: The last mile connectivity in the suburbs has become more expensive by sharing Autos to increase rates of up to 60% in the past two weeks.
“To travel between Avadi and Pattibiram, they demand Rs 20 per head,” said T Sadagopan, a resident activist from the western edge of the city.
The location of the suburbs is separate only five km.
Rama Rao from Traffic and Transport Forum (TTF), Chennai said on the southern outskirts, the driver collected up to ₹ 40 from traveling between Mount Station and Kilkattalai.
Previously, it was ₹ 25 to ₹ 30 per head.
Share the automatic driver attribute the revision mainly to climb the price of fuel.
“Our income is almost twice.
We have no choice but to increase costs,” said K Chandran, a sharing driver.
He was taken home less than ₹ 12,000 per month now.
With a reduced number of public transport options, the suburban commuters are forced largely depending on Share Autos.
Over the decades, this sector remained undoaked and there was no government control over their tariff system.
Southern Railway has not allowed the general public to travel by local trains during rush hour and MTC has not improved bus services equivalent to demand.
The waiting time hasn’t changed for ordinary and small buses, which are intended to connect the interior area with a transit point.
MTC in response to claiming that they have increased the bus frequency lately.
According to official data, the corporation operates 70 of the 170 small buses now.
It was less than 50 a few weeks ago.
Rao from TTF in response said that MTC usually carried out after the new government was responsible.
They revived the old route on the request of MLA or Local MP and stopped them six months later quoting financial unfylability.
“Instead of running a small bus parallel to the regular bus, MTC must use it to connect the housing colony.
